What is With My Own Hands?

I. WHAT? Tshay is currently developing a feature film, With My Own Hands, a story about a 10-year-old girl whose family runs a gambling ring. The film is being created collaboratively through an annual acting workshop in Philadelphia. During the workshop, collaborators use acting exercises, improv techniques, and mindfulness activities to develop characters and storylines for the film. In short: With My Own Hands is both a movie and its creative process.

II. WHY? In this unsettled moment it feels challenging to be joyful. We have witnessed immeasurable loss and grief and, even as our world begins to open up, we are living in an aggressively anti-black state. WMOH fosters an environment where artists can release the emotional, psychic, and spiritual burdens on their creativity. The workshop prioritizes experimentation, emphasizes the collective, and offers collaborators an opportunity to soften, reflect, and heal alongside one another.

III. THE MOVIE. With My Own Hands follows Mila, a 10-year-old girl, as she slowly learns that she has been hexed by her aunt. Mila lives with her Aunt Mora and Uncle Hector who run a bodega and, below that, a gambling ring. She recently relocated to New York from Jamaica and so far things are going fine. But when she suddenly becomes ill at a family party, Mila must retrace her memories of the evening to uncover the true cause of her mysterious sickness.
